#035, How I wish you were here to taste our SHADS

FACTS Swami Vivekananda in his letter dated 12th Dec. 1901 (six months before his death), wrote to Ms. Christina Greenstidel ( Christine ), from Belur Math. This is our best season for eating turtles , but they are all black. The green [ones] can only be found in America. Alas! I am prevented from the taste of meat. . .. ". OBSERVATION Green turtles, black turtles ! American turtles! Indian turtles! Color and nationality are also important! FACTS In his letter dated the 2nd September 1901 addressed to Christine, he showed his attachment to SHAD FISH (a species of fish swimming upstream from sea to a river for spawning, found in the Hooghly river flowing beside the Belur Monastery). "...How I wish you were here to taste our SHADS — one of the most delicate fish in the world. ... I would not take any supper tonight, as I ate rather heartily of the aforesaid shad! ... " OBSERVATIONS Fortunately only few foreigners came. Otherwise, the Hooghly river would have been em...

#034, AMERICANS ARE A MILLION TIMES NOBLER THAN HINDUS

Swami Vivekananda wrote to a Madras disciple from America on June 29, 1894: "... On the whole, the Americans are a million times nobler than the Hindus, and I can work more good here than in the country of the ingrate and the heartless. ... ". "... I have written to you about the phonograph. Now there is here an electric fan costing $20 and working beautifully. The battery works 100 hours and then can be replenished at any electric plant. Good-bye, I have had enough of the Hindus. ..." BLOGGER'S VIEWS *What will RSS and CPM will say about this? *Does he want the Madras disciples to buy the fan @ Dollars 20 and the phonograph? Otherwise Hindus will be ungrateful and heartless? On 12th Dec. 1899, Swamiji wrote to Mrs. Ole Bull in USA. "...If I cannot collect that — it is better to struggle and die for it than vegetate here in America. My mistakes have been great; ..."

#33, In ninety cases out of a hundred, fanatics must have bad livers

WORLD ANTI-SMOKING DAY (WORLD TOBACCO DAY) GREETINGS! Swami Vivekananda classified the fanatics he knew into wine fanatics, cigar fanatics. marriage fanatics etc. In volume 5 of his Complete Works ubiquitous on the Internet, in the Section of Notes from Lectures and Discourses, we can find a severe criticism "On fanatism". This lecture seems to have been delivered at Chicago, during the first visit. Some teetotallers may try to campaign against wine drinking. Now, Swamiji finds them cheating people and no woman being safe with him. Swamiji calls this person scoundrel. Those who campaign against wine are "wine fanatics". A woman who campaigns against smoking, Swamiji finds to be stealing. He calls those who campaign against smoking as "cigar fanatics." In India for some time, a few social reformers tried to popularise widow remarriages. Their idea was to improve the condition of widows, particularly the victims of child marriages. Swamiji calls the...

#32, They come in crowds when there is a free lecture and very few when there is something to pay

In 1896, Swami Vivekananda found himself "OVERWORKED" with busy schedule of lectures at Brooklyn, New York, Boston and then England. This can be seen from his letter dated 25th Jan. 1896 to Mrs. Ole Bull, written from New York. He even proposed to purchase a plot of 101 acres in Catskills. "...This year, I am afraid, I am getting overworked , as I feel the strain. I want a rest badly. So it is very good, as you say, that the Boston work be taken up in the end of March. By the end of April I will start for England. ..." He wrote to Mrs. Ole Bull from US on 17th January 1900: "... I do not expect anything much here or anywhere by lecturing. I can scarcely make expenses. No, not even that; whenever it comes to paying, the people are nowhere. The field of lecturing in this country has been overworked ; the people have outgrown that. ..." Swamiji wrote to Mrs. Ole Bull from San Francisco on 7th March 1900: "... Anyway, I thought I could make mon...

#031, otherwise CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES WILL TAKE

Swami Vivekananda had great love for orphans. He wrote to Rakhal from Kashmir on Sept. 13, 1897. "...I have read the letter that you sent regarding Gangadhar. Write to him that there are many orphans in Central India and in Gorakhpur. From there the Punjabis are getting many children. You must persuade Mahendra Babu and get up an agitation about this matter, so that the people of Calcutta are induced to take up the charge of these orphans — such a movement is very desirable. Especially a memorial (sic) should be sent to the Government requesting it to see that orphans taken over by the missionaries are returned to the Hindus. Tell Gangadhar to come over; and on behalf of the Ramakrishna Society a tearing campaign should be made. Gird up your loins, and go to every house to carry on the campaign. Hold mass meetings etc. Whether you succeed or not, start a furious agitation. Get all the facts from the important Bengali friends at Gorakhpur by writing to them, and let there be a co...

#30, I am mostly the guest of big people

Swami Vivekananda wrote from New York to his brother disciples at Alam Bazar Monastery in 1894, from U.S.A. "..I seldom live in hotels, but am mostly the guest of big people here. To them I am a widely known man. The whole country knows me now; so wherever I go they receive me with open arms into their homes ..." BLOGGER'S VIEWs *Only big people need Swamijis.

029, The money which I got by lecturing, I SPENT JUST AS I LIKE!

Image
Swami Vivekananda wrote to Mrs. Ole Bull, from Wimbledon, on Aug. 6, 1899: "... The money which I got in Europe and America by lecturing alone, I spent just as I like ; but every cent I got for the work has been accounted for and is in the Math ..." BLOGGER'S VIEWs Vide his letter dated 7th March 1900 to Mrs. Ole Bull, he washed off his hands with the financial affairs of the Math by getting accounts from Brahmananda for Rs. 35,000 and conceding that he (Vivekananda) used Rs. 5,000 from the Math funds intended for construction of cottage on Ganga. Vide Ibid: "...As for the Math and the money, the sooner I am relieved of that burden the better... I have given my place solemnly to you in Shri Ramakrishna's work. I am out of it ... " ybrao's personal view, not intended to be imposed on others:- Once accounts are asked for, Swamiji seems to have lost interest in the work of the Math (Monastery). To continue with more details and information. सशे...
